The Bigar Waterfall welcomes its visitors with an accessible tourist route, allowing a safe descent to the bottom of the waterfall

The ecotourism improvement process has been completed. The project is part of the sustainability platform DupaNoi.ro

Coca‑Cola HBC Romania, with the support of the ViitorPlus Association, the CON-A company, the Bozovici City Hall and the Cheile Nerei-Beusnita National Park Administration, announces the completion of the ecotourism improvement works in the Bigar Waterfall area, nominated in 2013 as the world’s most beautiful and unique waterfall*. The idea of the project belongs to the Coca‑Cola HBC employees from the Timisoara plant, who have noticed the area’s potential and wished for an easier and safe access to the bottom of the waterfall. The total amount of the funds granted for the project is approximately EUR 140,000. The improvement project contributes to the protection of the natural setting and the capitalization on the area’s tourism potential.

In Romania, there are so many treasures, unique places, such as the Bigar Waterfall, that need us to protect them and to spread their story. The fact that the idea started from our coworkers in Timisoara brings us great joy and once again proves our company’s promise, that we are always careful what we leave after us. A very dear project for the Coca‑Cola HBC Romania team, a project in which we believed and enthusiastically got involved in from the beginning – one must be at the bottom of the waterfall in order to admire its beauty and uniqueness. We have assigned a great deal of time, energy and resources and here we are, at the end. In this case, however, the end and the beginning overlap – it’s like this waterfall’s story is starting off again, on the right foot. We are honored that we were able to contribute, so that the story of the Bigar Waterfall can reach more people, easier

Irina Ionescu Public Affairs & Communication Manager, Coca-Cola HBC Romania

The entire project was managed by the ViitorPlus Association, the non-governmental organization that got involved since the beginning and supervised every phase – consultancy, design, endorsement and execution. Initiated in July 2016, the ecotourism improvement works targeted the development of a coherent tourist route - starting with the access to the Bigar Waterfall area and continuing with the other tourist attractions near it. Almost 10 months later, visitors can enjoy the project’s outcomes.

Main rehabilitation projects performed in the area:

  • setting up a footpath between the parking lot and the entry into the National park, along DN 57B;
  • setting up an access road from the entry into the Park and the building of a platform, facilitating the access to the bottom of the waterfall;
  • setting up areas and pathways between the waterfall and the spring, and the building of a pass to the Bigar Cave, located near the waterfall;
  • placing information signs, ecological trash bins, warning markings and rest areas in the area.

Since its incorporation, the ViitorPlus Association has developed sustainability projects with long term impact and relevant for Romania. Thus, we gladly accepted to get involved in managing this initiative. The Bigar Waterfall area is of particular beauty, and deserves to be made the most of, for the tens of thousands of tourists who go there each year and are able to rediscover our deep connection with nature. This was an exceptionally challenging project, that lasted 3 years, but we’re proud to have completed it properly, particularly as this is a successful example of partnership between public, private organizations and an NGO.
